 *UJEMEN* is a  small village situated in Esan west local government area of *EDO STATE* Nigeria. EDO STATE Nigeria is situated in the south south region of Nigeria previously called Bendel state.

 *UJEMEN* is surrounded with villagers under Esan west which includes: Emaudo , Eguare, Ekpoma,  Ihunmudumu, idumebo , Uke, Emuhi, Ukpenu, ujoelen , Igor, Uhiele, Illeh,        Urohi etc.

 *Before going further to unveil the historical background and Cultural belief* it is good to know the conceptual meaning of what the following words entails.

(A) *UJEMEN* : UJEMEN in Esan language or Ishan language popularly known  is derived from the word Ejemen.

 *Ejemen* simply means in Esan language " where is Good"

 *Cultural belief*: cultural beliefs are beliefs that a set of people in a community hold on to. For  Example belief in the supreme being , belief in the rules and regulations backing the community such as festival, sacrifice and ceremony.

 UJEMEN Historical Background

UJEMEN is small village situated in Ekpoma Edo state  Nigeria which is located in the southern part of Nigeria. It is belief all tribe in Edo state have directly link with the kingdom of Benin which is situated in the capital of Edo state Benin... All traditional rulers in Edo state are subjected to the oba of Benin.  The traditional ruler of the UJEMEN community is called Onojie. Onojie is an Esan word which simply means the king .


* *FESTIVAL* Festival is celebrating a particular event for a particular reason in a particular season. A day can be set side to mark and it can be marked as a sacred day for festive period. For example In the community of Christian faith Christmas day and Easter day marks the birth , death, burial , Resurrection of Jesus.

Festival in UJEMEN community is something that is highly celebrated and it is expected every body inhabiting the community must obey and observe this festive period. New yam festival which is done every month of August in a year,  new year in UJEMEN is celebrated from on the 1st of January till 7th .

**FOOD* Food is one of the entity that illustrate the traditional Culture of any community. For example the Yoruba have  good delicacy they are recognize with and this delicacy includes *Amala and ewedu.* 

So therefore, in UJEMEN community the food that is highly celebrated as their traditional meal is *akpu and bagga soup* 

 *Songs and Dance :* song and dance is one of the tool and also one entity that illustrate the traditional Culture of any community.

For those who are from the western territory of Nigeria which is predominantly dominated by Yoruba.. they have unique way of dancing which is popularly known as owambe and also a unique song known as Fuji song. People from *Tiv* land have a unique way of dancing known as  snake dance.

The people inhabiting the UJEMEN community have unique way of dancing and singing e.g 

" OSEMUDIAMEN o ye za ofen ye mu men " which simply means God stand for me that is why am not afraid. This very song is popular in UJEMEN community.

Their dance which illustrate UJEMEN traditional Culture is known as *Igbaboelimhin* Igbaboelimhin is derived from two Esan word *clapping for spirit* igbabo means clapping while elimhin means spirit. This dance is highly appreciated and celebrated in Edo state why because it is acrobatic dance that have attracted international visitors to Esan land especially Even in UJEMEN community to watch the dance. People involved in such dance are young people.

 *Conclusion* : The UJEMEN community have a unique Cultural and historical background and the people of UJEMEN who inhabiting the community are from Edo state which is located in the south south region region. Traditional and festival period the UJEMEN people have high esteem value for their Culture and tradition.. anyone who go against the tradition and Culture laid by their forefathers will be punished by what we called in Esan language elinmhin which simply means spirit.
