It is a known fact that the Tiv first wandered through the southern  and west central of Africa  before they finally Arrived and started settling at the savvanah lands of west Africa in sudan, which lays between the congo river and cameroon mountains.. 


    The Tiv man first settled at a place called the Swemkaragne (the region joinin Nigerian and cameroon). Tiv people are the major Dominating tribe in Benue state, but they are also found in Taraba, Nassarawa and plateu state, and they occupy About 3.5% of Nigerian population,They also constitute a total population of 6.5 millions in Nigeria.
    
From the beginning the Tiv Nation had no king and that was said to be the reason  why it was difficult for them to be recognized by the coloniel masters when they first came to Nigeria. The clan or kindred was often headed by the oldest person which was popularly called the "Orya".

  The Tiv attire is combination of  black and white colours, which was gotten from the Zebra colours, And these colours symbolize Anger.

  The Tiv with other tribes in benue are popularly known as the food basket of the nation, and they are known majorly for their massive production of yams. The cultural food of the Tiv people are: Ruam kumen (pounded yam), Akuto(Sweet potato pottage), Pocho, Ager, Genger, Atyeve, Igyo, Asee, Vambe and much more. Their main traditional wine is Called Burukutu.
   
     The culture of the Tiv man is mixture of their belives, traditions, customs and habits. The Tiv Nation is headed by someone  apointed by the people and he is popularly called the TOR TIV..
